Load the Boat
A) Workshop the “centers part” first in 2-couple setups, emphasizing it from the half-sashayed arrangement.
B) Make sure the centers’ initial Pass Thru is “just barely” so that they’ll find someone to trade with after the Quarter Out (Face Out).
C) Centers have 4 parts (P’s) Pass, Pivot away, Partner Trade, and Pass.
D) Put them in Partner Lines and show the Ends what they’ll do, then let the Centers do their thing. Right and Left Thru, Slide Thru and do it again. After several successes, call Star Thru, and give everyone a chance to dance through the standard setup.
More teaching suggestions:
— Encourage compact action in the center by describing the outsides as being sharks in the water swimming around a small boat.
Quick Summary of Load the Boat (for Facing Lines): The End dancers will go around the outside to the other end of their Line where they will meet the dancer who was standing beside them. The Center dancer will dance with the other Center dancers: Pass, Pivot away, Partner Trade, Pass.
